What factors determine the cost of an area rug?
There are a variety of factors that can determine the cost of a rug. The material used, the construction, the manufacturer, and in certain cases the pattern or design. In addition, some rugs are licensed by designers or celebrities.
What are some of the traditional rug patterns?
Heriz, Tabriz, Kashan, Agra, Mahal, Aubusson, and Savonnerie are some of the most common traditional rug patterns. Some of these patterns are named after the region where they are made, or they have a religious or tribal influence. There are thousands of different patterns to choose from.
What are the different types of construction for rugs?
Hand-Tufted, Hand-Hooked, Hand-Knotted, Flat-Woven Braided & Machine-Made are the main types of construction for area rugs.
What type(s) of area rugs are safe to use on hardwood floors?
Due to our close relationship with Buffalo Hardwood we have a firm understanding of what works and what doesn’t work with hardwood floors. The pad being used under the rug is the biggest factor; because it is a separate underlayment it provides a barrier between the rug and the floor. Any of the pads we sell at Caroll Rug are safe to use on hardwood floors. The pad will prevent anything such as crumbs, dust, or dirt from transferring through the rug and scratching the floor underneath.
What is the most durable fiber for an area rug, wool, or synthetic?
For good looks that last, wool is best and naturally the most durable fiber, it wears the longest and cleans up well. A wool rug must be professionally dry cleaned or you can use a cleaner appropriate for wool to spot clean. If you are allergic to wool or simply prefer a synthetic rug, quality is key. Some of the newer synthetic rugs on the market are designed to have the look and feel of wool rugs. Caroll Rug displays WNY's largest selection of quality nylon, polypropylene, and acrylic rugs.
At Caroll Rug we always recommend a pad with every rug. The main benefit of a pad is to keep the rug from slipping and sliding on the floor, but it will also protect the floor underneath. A pad can also help the wearability of a rug, and our thicker pad gives the rug a little cushion under foot, which is especially nice if you ever sit or lay on your rug.
Should I be looking for a hand-knotted area rug? What’s the best quality?
Hand-knotted construction is the best, many high quality hand-knotted oriental rugs can last for decades; these are referred to as heirloom quality. Of course, high end hand knotted rugs come with a higher price. For each type of rug there are variations in quality, for example, a high quality hand-tufted rug can outperform a lower quality hand-knot. Don’t be overwhelmed, quality, pattern and color are the most important factors, no matter the type of rug. As always, when you buy a rug at Caroll Rug, we stand behind it.

Stair Runner and Wall to Wall Questions
I need a stair runner where do I begin?
Caroll Rug has Western New York’s largest selection of stair runners with hundreds of styles available. A stair runner can dramatically change the look of your home. Start by taking some samples home and when you’re ready Caroll Rug will install your runner and add stair rods if you like. Caroll Rug offers the highest quality installation in W.N.Y. Stair runners are priced by linear foot and a standard stair case requires a foot and a half of material per stair. Caroll Rug installs stair runners with miter cuts, circular and pie shape stairs as well. Runners can also be installed on hallways or you can loose lay them with non-slip padding.
What is standard width of stair runner?
Standard runner size is 27”, but many are available in 31”, 36”, or even as wide as 48”, same for hall runners.
What is the best material choice for wall to wall?
The type of fiber used in wall to wall carpet plays a key role in how it feels and how it performs. Wool carpet will wear the best and last the longest, but it is more expensive. Most wall to wall carpets on the market are made from synthetic fibers, such as nylon, polypropylene, or polyester. After wool, we would recommend a nylon which provides a less expensive option than wool but still maintains durability and softness. Polypropylene, also known as olefin, tends to flatten or crush, but is mostly used in multi-colored patterned products, because of how well it dyes. Caroll Rug offers a wide selection of quality wall to wall from the finest manufacturers in the world.
